Joomla! - Because Open Source Matters
I was introduced to Joomla! by Francis Doody (more about him later) in 2005. Joomla! is a Content Management System (CMS). It actually was a branch off from Mambo and over the last two years have developed to the most popular CMS on the planet.Joomla! is licenced as an Open Source Software under General Public Licence (GPL), which basically means that loads of geeks write amazing code so that everyone else in the world can use free of charge. With Joomla! you are able to make a really great website at extremely competitive costs, if you are prepared to spend a lot of time getting to know the software. OK, you won’t have the time but there are people designing modules and components to make it quite easy to get online as soon as possible.
What, for me, is the advantage of Joomla!, is that once your site is set up, you have the possibility to easily update the information from a back office admin area. Gone are the days where you need experts to do this for you. Yes, you have to invest your time getting to know how to use this back office area. But really, any secretary will be able to do this in days. And soon, you will be able to add as much detail to the site as you wish.
I am at present developing a Joomla! Network here in Portugal. Francis Doody (I mentioned above) will be responsible for JoomlaLisbon. Additionally, the intention is that there will be a JoomlaPorto, JoomlaCoimbra, Joomla Beja and JoomlaAlgarve. I will write more on this soon. In the mean time do take a look at the Joomla! site and the many Joomla! modules and components that will enable you to build your company website. You will very soon have expert help at hand.
