The land of my ancestors…
I had occasion to visit Funchal, Madeira on the 20th October 2008 and although I had only visited once before, fond memories flooded back.
I couldn’t help being struck by some of the islands natural beauty, a very human scale, in the middle of absolute nowhere, but just 1 hour and 30 minutes from Lisbon. Their is so much of Portugal and so much more of Madeira….really quite unique.
As I left, I couldn’t help thinking of my ancestors leaving, sometime way back in the 1850’s…
