THE JERK IN THE OFFICE…

This may be useful to some of you… :) You can see the original blog here…

If we asked you to describe the jerk in your office, we’d probably get an earful. Maybe it’s a colleague, a boss or even the CEO. Perhaps we put up with their bad behavior because we think they’re visionary leaders or they possess a specific skill set we can’t do without. More likely, though, we’re simply unable to do anything about them.

But jerks aren’t simply an unpleasant fact of life, argues Tom Davenport in a post at Harvard Business Online—they’re actually more likely to make decisions actively detrimental to your company’s wellbeing.

Here’s why:

“Jerks tend to think their own perspectives are the only ones worth considering, but good decisions require serious consideration of alternatives.”
“Jerks think they’re never wrong, but good decisions require acknowledging and learning from mistakes.”
“Jerks are consumed with petty resentments and grievances, but good decisions require clear-headed, objective thinking.”
“Jerks alienate other people, but good decisions require collaboration across a social network.”
Davenport stops short of speaking in absolute terms. “While all jerks don’t always make bad decisions,” he notes, “and non-jerks occasionally decide badly too, I’d guess that there is a sizable correlation between jerkiness and bad judgment.”

Your Marketing Inspiration is to consider his perspective—if your company hires, promotes and retains jerks, it’s probably cultivating a team of bad decision-makers.

All Growed Up…

NOT My Algarve…

Funny how things are…just as I was getting quite excited about Splash!Weekends starting in Albufeira, I found this news…

Shit…awful…I have been all over the Albufeira (although this did NOT happen in the Albufeira), drinking until late, and never seen anything like this. I know the people in the Algarve will be absolutely devastated as well.

Strange that this didn’t make the TV news here in Portugal…YET, although I am sure it will…I first saw it (this morning) in the Portuguese Press (Público Online) and followed the trail…

Very sad….

To My Good Health…

When to my doctor after too many years and she gave me a load of tests to do…like the full Monty of tests. From the results she said:

1. Stop smoking - it’s not a problem but it will become if I don’t. Of course I have, for the last three days since I saw her.

2. Colestrol - Cut out fatty stuff, like butter, pork, mascarpone, fried stuff…it’s amazing how when you look at alternatives you find some really nice stuff.

3. Excercise - She said I have to do something, like anything…preferably swimming. Seems that sitting in front of a computer for a billion hours ain’t so good for the body after all. :)

The effects of growing old I guess…

Albufeira - August 2009

Just returned (19th August) from the Albufeira (Algarve…Portugal) where my friend and I spent the last 5 days…

It was absolutely amazing…perfect weather (as you expect from the Algarve in August), perfect food, relaxing, regenerating….just what I needed really…

Particularly nice to see all the people we met some time back and who still remember us, as we walk into the bar or restaurant of shop…

Nice also to see so many people bringing their families (old and young) and all able to have fun.

Thanks for coming over John…
